HS code lookup
An HS code has 6 digits, an EU CN code 8 and a TARIC code 10; the first six digits are the HS code, the base of customs tariffs worldwide. Type a code of 2 to 10 digits to see its place in the EU's goods list, from its section down to the line itself, with the text of every line above it. Or type words to find the lines that hold them. A line that matches is a line to read, not a classification (how customs decides between two codes).

A code or a word that matches a line does not mean your goods belong under it. Goods are classified under the General Interpretative Rules (CN Part One, Section I A): the terms of the headings and the section and chapter notes decide first, and only where those do not otherwise require do rules 2 to 5 apply (rule 1); rule 6 sets the same order for subheadings, with their subheading notes. The CN adds its own section and chapter notes (CN Regulation Art. 1(2)(c)). The Explanatory Notes to the HS and the Explanatory Notes to the CN (the 2019 edition, and the notes published since in the Official Journal, C series) say how a heading is read; the CN notes do not replace the HS ones. Titles of sections and chapters are for reference only (rule 1).
The decision that binds the customs authorities as against its holder is binding tariff information: only for goods that correspond in every respect to those it describes and are cleared after it takes effect, and for three years (UCC Art. 33(2), (3), (4); Art. 34 on when it ends).
The ten-digit TARIC code and the measures on it are in TARIC.
The lines are those of Annex I to the Combined Nomenclature Regulation, as replaced for 2026 by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1926, which applies from 1 January 2026; text read 5 October 2026. The CN is renewed every 1 January (CN Regulation Art. 12(1)).
HS, CN and TARIC: 6, 8 and 10 digits
The three names are one code read to three lengths. Only the first six digits are shared with other countries; the UK and the US add their own digits after them (HS code).
| Name | Digits | Set by | What it carries |
|---|---|---|---|
| HS code | 6 | The World Customs Organization, in the Harmonized System, which more than 200 countries and economies use as the base of their customs tariffs | The goods list that national customs tariffs are built on |
| CN code | 8 | The EU, in the Combined Nomenclature: the first six digits are the HS code, the seventh and eighth are the EU's own (CN Regulation Art. 3(1)) | The customs tariff, with the third-country duty for each code, and the EU's external trade statistics (Art. 1(1), 1(3)) |
| TARIC code | 10 | The Commission, which adds the ninth and tenth digits where an EU measure needs a finer split (Art. 2, 3(2)) | The measures on the goods: duties, preferences, quotas and the other EU measures linked to the code (UCC Art. 56(1), 57(3)). The measures are in TARIC |
The lookup holds the 8-digit CN, which carries the 6-digit HS subheading in its first six digits: 21 sections with 96 chapters, 1,228 headings,5,612 HS subheadings and 9,791 CN codes. Chapters 98 and 99 are the CN's own: they belong to no section, are not part of the HS, and hold 9 more CN codes, the special codes of chapter 99. A ten-digit code gets its CN line and a link to TARIC, which holds the ninth and tenth digits.
How a line of the CN reads
The CN is printed as a list in which a line's text depends on the lines above it. Each dash in front of a line means one level down: a line with two dashes is a part of the nearest line above it with one dash, which is a part of the heading. A line such as "– – Of wool or fine animal hair or man-made fibres" says nothing alone; under "– Of other textile materials" under heading 6109, "T-shirts, singlets and other vests, knitted or crocheted", it is code 6109 90 20. So every answer on this page shows the lines above the one you asked about: section, chapter, heading, then each line of lower dash level.
The titles of sections and chapters are for reference only. The terms of the headings and the notes of the section and chapter decide first, and only where those do not otherwise require do the other rules apply (rule 1 of the General Interpretative Rules, CN Part One, Section I A), which is why a section or chapter title is shown here and never used to match a word.
What the word search does
- A CN code line is listed when it holds every word you typed, in its own text or in the lines above it up to its heading. A plural counts as its singular. A hyphenated word such as t-shirt is read whole; only when no line holds it whole are its parts read as separate words. Section and chapter titles are not searched.
- Lines are ranked, and the order is plain: first the lines that hold more of your words in their own text rather than only in the lines above them; then the lines that hold your words as you typed them, before the lines that hold them only through the regulation's own wording (below); then code order. At most 20 lines are shown, grouped under their heading.
- When no line holds every word, each word is listed alone, 5 lines for each. A word that is in no line is named.
- A few everyday words are also searched as the words the regulation uses: phone as telephone; battery as accumulator; tv as television; sweater as pullover; jumper as pullover; hoodie as pullover; jeans as trousers; sneaker as footwear; trainer as footwear; backpack as rucksack; speaker as loudspeaker; drone as unmanned; laptop as portable and data-processing.
- The first line is first because of its words. The ranking does not say which line fits your goods, and no answer here calls any line "your code".
A worked example
You sell T-shirts made of knitted cotton. Type cotton t-shirt in the word search and on 5 October 2026 this is the answer:
Lines of the CN that hold your words
Words searched: cotton, t-shirt.
1 CN code line holds every word, in the line itself or in the lines above it. A line that holds your words is a line to read with the lines above it, not an answer for your goods.
- Section XI Textiles and textile articles
- Chapter 61 Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted
- 6109 T-shirts, singlets and other vests, knitted or crocheted heading
- 6109 10 00 – Of cotton HS subheading, CN code
Heading 6109 names T-shirts, and the line "– Of cotton" under it is the CN code 6109 10 00. Whether your goods belong under that line is decided by the terms of the heading and the notes to chapter 61, with the rules in how customs decides between two codes; the lookup shows the line, not the decision. The standard import declaration (H1) takes ten digits, the EUR 150 import declaration (H7) six and the export declaration eight (commodity code). Type 6109 10 00 10 in the code field, and the answer shows the CN code the ten digits start with and links TARIC for the whole:
CN code
6109 10 00 is a CN code in the Combined Nomenclature for 2026. Its line, with the lines above it that give it its meaning:
- Section XI Textiles and textile articles
- Chapter 61 Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted
- 6109 T-shirts, singlets and other vests, knitted or crocheted heading
- 6109 10 00 – Of cotton HS subheading, CN code
You typed ten digits. The first eight, 6109 10 00, are the CN code shown above; the last two, 10, are the TARIC subheading digits, which the Commission adds where an EU measure needs a finer split (CN Regulation Art. 3(1), (2)). This table holds the CN, not the TARIC subheadings, so it cannot say whether TARIC lists that subheading. TARIC lists the measures for every origin that apply to 6109 10 00 10 on a date: TARIC measures for 6109 10 00 10.
The duty the CN prints for this code, and the import VAT on it, are worked out in the landed cost calculator.

What a match is
- A line, not a classification. Goods are classified under the General Interpretative Rules in CN Part One, Section I A: the terms of the headings and the section and chapter notes decide first, and only where those do not otherwise require do rules 2 to 5 apply (rule 1); rule 6 sets the same order for subheadings, with their subheading notes. The CN adds its own section and chapter notes (CN Regulation Art. 1(2)(c)). The Explanatory Notes to the HS and the Explanatory Notes to the CN(the 2019 edition, and the notes published since in the Official Journal, C series) say how a heading is read; the CN notes do not replace the HS ones. The Commission's notes are not legally binding, but customs revoke a binding tariff information decision that is no longer compatible with one, from the day the note is published (UCC Art. 34(7)(a)(i)): CN explanatory notes.
- The decision that binds customs. Binding tariff information is a decision that binds the customs authorities as against its holder: only for goods that correspond in every respect to those it describes and are cleared after it takes effect, and for three years (UCC Art. 33(2), (3), (4); Art. 34 on when it ends): binding tariff information.
- The declarant answers for the code. The declarant owes any duty a wrong code left unpaid, and customs can claim it for three years after the debt was incurred, five to ten where criminal proceedings could follow (UCC Art. 15(2), 77(3), 103(1), 103(2)): what a wrong code costs.
- The ten-digit code and its measures are in TARIC. The duty the CN prints for an 8-digit code, and the import VAT on it, are worked out in the landed cost calculator.
